Frequently Asked Questions

What does therapy do?

Therapy provides a place where you will have a professional trained in helping you identify and achieve your goals. Therapy is a scientific, evidence-based treatment that provides ways to improve your quality of life and relationships.

Do I need therapy?

I am of the belief that therapy is geared toward individuals who are goal-oriented and want to take action and face their problems straight on. Sometimes, people attend therapy because they are looking for personal, professional or relational growth. I believe all people can benefit from therapy.

Why don’t you accept Insurance?

I do not accept insurance because many of my clients do not need a mental health diagnosis. A diagnosis is required to have reimbursement from an insurance company. This provides me the ability to treat each individual and couples uniquely while also adhering to best practices. It allows me to treat my clients without time restraints or specific interventions that are only covered by insurance. If you would like to use your health benefits, I do offer superbills for reimbursement.

What is a SuperBill?

A superbill is a detailed invoice that outlines the services rendered by an out-of-network provider. I am considered out-of-network because I am not paneled with an insurance company. A superbill requires a diagnosis and a billing code. This information is submitted to your insurance company and may reimburse you minus your copay rate. I encourage all of my clients to check with their specific plan to ensure reimbursement.

What are your fees?

I charge $130 per session for individuals

$150 for couples and family sessions

I do offer a few spots for sliding scale for teachers, military, first-responders and college students.

How long are sessions?

I offer 50-minute and 90-minute sessions when applicable.

What Can I expect?

You can expect that I will provide you with ACA (American Counseling Association) ethics, professionalism, respect, updated interventions and compassion. I recognize that I am not the therapist for everyone. You have to be comfortable when entering counseling, which is why I offer a complimentary counseling session to see if we would be a good fit. If not, I am happy to provide some referrals to some other great therapists in our community.

When we work together, I will first complete an assessment to get an idea of your background and history. Together we will then create a customized plan for you. For couples, I will send you some inventories and questionnaires that are designed to establish you and your partners strengths and areas to improve upon.

While there are no guarantees in counseling, most of my clients walk away from counseling feeling more empowered, aware and “lighter”.

How many sessions will I need?

It’s challenging to come up with a number as each person is unique in their goals. While everyone is different, I strive to provide skills to take with you after each session to work on between sessions. My ultimate goal is to work myself out of a job, successfully.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

After our initial consult, you will be provided with a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) This document will list the estimated charges of your treatment with Illuminating Pathways. The purpose of this document is to protect you from "surprise billing" or "balance billing". When you see a health care provider, you may owe out-of-pocket costs, such as a co-payment, coinsurance, and/or a deductible. You may have other costs or have to pay the entire bill if you see a provider or visit a facility that isn't in network. "Out-of-Network" describes providers and facilities that haven't signed a contract with your health plan. Out-of-network providers may be permitted to bill you for differences that your plan agreed to pay and the full amount charged for a service. This amount is likely more than in-network costs for the same service and may not count toward your annual out-of-pocket limit. This is called "balance billing". "Suprise billing" is an unexpected balance bill. This can happen when you can't control who is involved in your care. You are protected from surprise billing and will be in control of how many sessions you attend. You are not obligated to attend more sessions than you desire at any point in time. The agreed upon fee will not change. If prices do change, you will receive a 30 day notice. Sliding scale options are offered upon availability and eligibility. Please inquire if this is needed. If you believe you have been wrongly billed please contact our staff to remedy any possible billing errors. If you feel we have been unable to remedy a billing issue, you may file a formal complaint at:

Kay loves to travel and is absolutely a pup lover too! Linus got his name because he use to drag a blanket around as a puppy-like Linus from Peanuts!
